No keg has to be given back to be refilled.
Kegs are recycled locally. In comparison with bottled wines, the savings on transport can run to 85%. It also lowers CO2 emissions, and the use of compressed air reduces CO2 emissions even more. Also, restaurants do not need harsh chemicals for intensive cleaning, as you do with steel kegs.
A 20-liter keg is a common size and replaces 27 glass bottles, corks, capsules, carboard boxes and labels. A single restaurant moving about 120 cases of wine per month is going to avoid the use of about 17,000 bottles per year, which translates into 8 tons of glass waste alone with related financial and environmental costs.
